Contacts+

Native mobile and web SaaS applicatinos

I led the unification process for the Android platform, designed for the iOS app and Web application, and delivered a highly requested Dark Mode.

I was also working at maintaining and scaling FullContact’s design system.

What is Contacts+?

Contacts+ is the world’s leading contacts (phone book) and dialer app, powered with caller ID & spam block - all in one place. It's an effortless way to keep your contacts organized and up-to-date thanks to a smart "Assistant" feature that scans contacts for any updates, duplicates, and outdated information.

Contact+ Pro Design

Senior Stakeholders at C+ made a decision to unify a legacy application with the rebranded C+ Pro application. The greatest challenge was stemming from several points to consider:

Both apps had tremendously different user bases that they catered to. Legacy C+ had a predominant user base location in India and Asian countries, whilst C+ pro-North America and Europe, its many users being C-suite level professionals, entrepreneurs, etc.

The spending power of C+ Pro users was also much higher compared to the Legacy C+ user base.

Legacy C+ had a design that seemed much more quirky and featured a customizable theme. C+ Pro, however, had a sleek and expensive look.

Each user base was used to using the app for specific features, so we had to factor that in, but also prioritize which features to roll out in the unified app given time and resource constraints for the development phase.

Problem

Contacts+ had two separate apps with varied functionalities and user bases. It was very costly and hard for the business to maintain both apps.

Dark Mode

With the dark theme becoming one of the most requested features over the past few years, Contacts+ also released dark mode versions for mobile and web apps.

Developing a Dark Mode was more than just a "coloring" task for me. I set out a goal to make the app look exciting and fresh to the users, make the important elements stand out, but not be too "shouting".

Though I was primarily working with different black and grey shades, it was very fun to experiment and try to find a perfect visual balance for the dark version of the app.

Here's an example of how DM looks on wide screens. You can see how the important information or one that we want to put in front of our users, just pops with the usage of blue on black (e.g. for the Primary Action Buttons).

Dark Mode on iOS. C+ Dark Mode was launched on the day of the new iOS release in September 2019.

It was highly crucial for us to roll out a Dark Mode feature on the new C+ pro application. The reason being, old C+ users were requesting themes features quite persistently. So whilst we decided to get rid of full customization, we still wanted to find a balance between addressing user needs and keeping the app as lightweight as possible. As a result, we settled on this Dark Mode feature.
